The next generation of lightweight aircraft materials

The stiffness, strength and light weight of aluminium matrix composites (AMC), coupled to its anisotropic properties, can be exploited to reduce the weight and complexity of structures in the next generation of aircraft, and to achieve performance and fuel efficiency beyond that of conventional materials.  Adoption of AMC materials would bring the advantages of composites to the large number of metallic structural components that have hitherto been beyond the capability of carbon fibre.

Projected requirements for new commercial aircraft include over 27,000 single-aisle jets over the next 20 years. Applying AMC to just 4% of a typical aircraft structure would yield a weight saving of around 120kg per aircraft. Aircraft weight savings are valued at around two orders of magnitude greater (in £/kg) than in automotive, due to the critical impact of weight on fuel economy and passenger capacity. Even in the latest CFRP-intensive aircraft, metallic components account for around 50% of structural weight. Metallic parts are found in most aircraft systems, including airframe, landing gear, engines, wing structures and fuselage interiors – in total, even in carbon fibre intensive aircraft, over 4,000 metallic components are required.

The opportunity presented by AMC is to reconsider system and component designs, using the anisotropic properties of AMC materials to redesign and simplify complex metallic components and assemblies.
