Rarely do engineering components require high strength and stiffness throughout – generally, there are regions of low stress, where reduced mechanical properties are acceptable. By using aluminium matrix composites (AMC) as pre-cast inserts that are then cast into a larger aluminium component we are able to create hybrid-AMC components that provide local reinforcement where required. By using this method the use of AMC can be restricted to those areas of a component where high performance is required, further increasing the cost-competitiveness of the material. The aluminium in the AMC inserts can be engineered to fuse with the molten aluminium in the overcast component, fully integrating the AMC insert into the parent metal.
