Continuous improvement – Research and Development

CMT is committed to research and development, to open yet more opportunities for its materials.

Throughout its history, CMT has invested heavily in research and development. In recent years, this has been driven by a relentless pursuit of cost reduction, in order to open the technology to a greater range of applications. This work has resulted in innovations such as hybrid-AMC, where AMC inserts can be cast inside an aluminium component, fused to the overcast material, enabling localised reinforcement and making more efficient use of the fibre preform. The company has developed enhanced processes for preform infiltration, improving quality and, through process parameter optimisation, reducing cost, and continues to work with its preform suppliers on the optimisation of preform structures to achieve maximum efficiency.

Aluminium matrix composite is not a single material – it is an infinite number. Each unique arrangement of fibre, either filament wound or woven, will produce a unique set of mechanical properties. Each time a new preform is designed for a particular application, it must be rigorously tested to confirm the mechanical properties – time that is not available in a typical product development programme. The company is addressing this issue by developing standardised insert geometries and architectures with pre-established properties, reducing product development lead times. The company is also at the forefront of the development of new CAE methods, to produce a comprehensive toolset for applications FEA. These R&D activities are conducted internally, at CMT’s expense, and also in collaborative R&D projects with UK Government support via Innovate UK. Thus, the company is able to punch significantly above its weight and is delivering its objectives of rendering the AMC technology affordable for all industrial sectors.
