CMT Plc was established in 2003 to commercialise an innovative form of casting technology known as Advanced Liquid Pressure Forming (ALPF). Developed by CMT Ltd specifically for the manufacture of aluminium matrix composites (AMC), which is exciting the manufacturing industry as a whole.
The original LPF technology was invented by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) for military applications at a cost of approximately £20 million and was subsequently licensed to CMT Ltd by the UK Government, acting through QinetiQ, in order to transfer the technology into civil markets. Since licensing the technology CMT has created its own proprietary intellectual property, which has superseded the MoD’s licensed LPF technology and has considerably more commercial potential, some elements of which are the subject of patents.
CMT was originally embedded inside QinetiQ’s Structures and Materials Centre on the Cody Technology Park in Farnborough, which was where the ALPF technology was developed. In 2007 CMT relocated to brand new stand-alone industrial premises on the prestigious Prisma Business Park in Basingstoke. CMT’s premises comprise both an office and three separate factory units with floor space of approximately 1,800 sq ft and 7,500 sq ft respectively. The factory units house CMT’s production equipment, state-of-the-art materials evaluation and testing laboratories, secondary processing equipment, and research and development facilities.
